Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs

Sony's 'Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs' is full of amazing colour work. The colour varies by a huge amount through the duration of the film.The shot above shows soft feeling colours that uses a range of tints and shades to set the mood.

Strong pinks and purples are used to create a feeling of magic and to show that something it's right about what is happening. The bright pinks also make it seem like it's a good thing  that has happened and helps set a happy mood. If another colour was used such as green and grey tints, it would make it seem like it's a bad thing that is taking place. This makes the scene much more visually interesting.

This scene caught my eye because of the very strong and bright orange colours being used in the scene. The complementary colours set the scene very well and give that warm inviting feeling.

While they are inside the jelly you can see that the complementary hue can no longer can be seen and a range of orange tints and shades are used. it reflects the emotion of the characters very well as this was a happy time for them both in the movie. The colours support the mood of the story very well.

Ratatouille

This is a shot from Pixar's 'Ratatouille'. They use a huge amount of broken and neutral colours in the film. The colours seem alot more desaturated compared to say Pixar's 'Toy Story'. There doesn't seem to be any hues or saturated colours in this shot at all. They have kept closer to reality when it comes to the colour scheme of this film as a huge amount of the story is based in the kichen. All the rats have a very slightly different variations of broken and neutral colours so you are able to see the differents between them clearly.

Tangled

This is a shot from Disneys 'Tangled'. You can see how the complementary hues standout between the characters and environment. The green colours from the chair and the purple colours of Rapunzel's dress are more saturated than the background colours. The background consists of mostly shades of colours because of the controlled lighting on the characters. This automatically makes the characters more interesting to look at in the frame and the attention is drawn to them. The neutral colours on Flynn Rider clothing Reflect his rebellion and homeless nature.

Simpsons

This is a piece of colour work from 'The Simpsons'. This shows how identifiable each character is just by showing block hue colours. I certainly wouldn't have thought that I would be able to tell which characters are which just from looking at this. But just from taking a glace i can see that I can name around 5 - 10 characters. The colour proportions are very well thought out for each character and each one has a unique colouring.

Toy Story

Pixar's 'Toy Story' one,two and three uses a very wide range of saturated and vibrant colours. From looking at the poster above you can see the huge differences in colour between each character. Because of the characters being toys you are able to except this. Throughout the whole film Toy Story uses bright and energy filled colours to reflect the story.

This image is a great example of very saturated colours. The scene is set in a childrens pre school so this kind of colour scheme works well.

Rango

Above are Character designs from Industrial Light and Magics (ILM) animated film 'Rango'. The character designs are amazing and they use a wide range of neutral colors. Many are desaturated but fit in with the style and life of the film. It seems they have stuck to keeping the characters colour schemes close to the real life creatures they are designed to be. The characters have similar structure to their real life representations but their traits are very different, even so the look of the film feels very real and believable. The use of broken colours fits well with the dessert environment.

The sky shown in these concepts and in the film tend to be the strongest saturated colour throughout. Bright clear skies are in contrast to the neutral colors of the buildings.

Tarzan

A Disney classic 'Tarzan'! This background artwork from the film shows a huge range of tints and shades of green and makes the forest look rich with colour. The artist has put spots of yellow light to show the light coming through from the tree leafs above. This makes the background much more dynamic and it gives form to the branches. The colours reflect the life of the forest and make it alive.

This image above shows another scene from inside the forest. This scene has a high contrast in colours unlike the first image. The composition and colour work do i very good job on keeping the character as the main focus on such a bright background.

How to train your dragon artwork

This art work is from Dreamworks 'How to Train your Dragon'. I really like the color values they have used to show the amazing environment design. The greens and blues have a very strong contrast that work well together. You can see how they have used light tints to create a focal point within the image.

I really like the rich red colours with the light blues colours of the sky in this image. The image sets the mood of a bright sunny day and gives a rich and lively feeling. The colour values work well in the picture and create that feeling of hope and a positive outlook.

Paranorman Concepts

This is some environment designs from the film Paranorman. The colors used are varied tints and shades of grey with a few hues. It sets the scene well as you can tell it's a foggy dull morning or place. This also helps make the buildings stand out from the background and your eye is automatically drawn to them. This colour scheme appears to work very well with the art style, the sharp angles of the buildings give it a slight creepy feel.

This colour work in this environment looks much more inviting and bright compared to the other two concepts. I wider range of different shades and tints of colours gives the concept more depth and makes it feel homely.

Incredibles Artwork

This is a piece of artwork from Pixar's 'The Incredibles'. I found this very interesting how the shapes and colour scheme defines each character very well and you are able to identify them. They have used a range of  harmonious hues and basic shapes to describe the characters body shapes. I find that red is a very strong colour and stands out from most natural colours or environments. You can see from below how the colours of the super heroes separates them from the background. I also believe that the red colour portrays them as a strong family unit fighting against crime. It may also be seen as a sign of love between the characters.

Kung Fu Panda Concepts

 These are two pieces of art work from Dreamworks 'Kung Fu Panda'. This is a good example of using two hues to create a mood in a scene. These colours give the feeling of a dramatic action or an important part of the movie. I really like the sharp red colours used to describe the light in the scene, it makes a very high contrast between the strong hues.

The colour in this piece helps tell what is happening in the scene. By using a saturated red colour it gives the feeling of war or anger. The art style in my option uses very sharp and pointed line work  that works well with the saturated colour. The art work as a hole does well to tell the mood and story in a single image.

How to train your Dragon Concepts

These are two shots from Dreamworks film 'How to Train your Dragon'. I picked these two because they give good examples of colour to set the mood within a scene. The top image shows the main character in his room. The warm yellow colours from the light give a very inviting feeling. The bottom image sets a romantic feel from the blue colours of the moon light. The blue colours reflect what in happening between to the characters in the scene. Both these scenes make the use of one hue colour to light the scene correctly for the right effect on the audience.

Colour work of Brave

Pixar's brave shows a strong use of saturated color for the main characters hair. Through out the film the main character is made to stand out from the rest of the background colors. Darker blues and greens are used to contrast with the strong ginger color of her hair. This draws the audience attention straight to the character and she becomes the focal point within the framed scene. It's a very clear and cleaver use of color that also reflects the characters courage and spirit during the film.
